 20 Air Travel Beauty Essentials

.

Being somewhat of a nervous flier, I always like to pack everything that I know I'll need because the smoother my flight experience is, the less likely I'll need to take anti-anxiety medication. Not only do I get angsty before and during a flight, but my skin can get hella stressed, too. With sudden changes in humidity and temperature, in-flight-not to mention jet lag!-your poor skin is going to go through the wringer, possibly to be just parched, irritated, or even breakout.

Thankfully, there are steps to take-and products to pack-to avoid the skin irritation caused by air travel. I've tried a ton of travel beauty products throughout my years as a beauty journalist, and there are a few items that I always seem to end up shoving into my carry-on bag.

I'm not one of those in-flight divas who puts on a sheet mask, slathers on heavy eye cream, and jade rolls her face the entire flight. That's just too much for me-that's just a bit too extra. That said, there definitely are some in-flight beauty essentials I just can't fly without-some a smidge more high maintenance than others. Below, find my ultimate 20 air travel beauty must-haves.

20 Air Travel Beauty Essentials

Paula’s Choice LIP & BODY Emollient Treatment Balm

This is, hands down, my favorite lip balm, and I have gone through so many containers of this stuff over the years. It says for lips and body, but I use it primarily for my lips, especially when traveling. What I notice is that I won't have to reapply this stuff as often, as it really does a great job of staying on my lips without budging.

It is free of fragrances and does not contain some of the BS some other lip balms may contain. One of the few that will not irritate my lip area. Def on the thick side, more like a thick balm rather than a light lip gloss or anything along those lines.

Wander Beauty Baggage Claim Eye Patches

Like I said, I'm not one of those divas doing a 10-step beauty routine on an airplane. But if I do feel like being diva-ish and want to feel extra pampered, I like using these under-eye patches to appear bright-eyed and bushy-tailed when I hop off the plane. They contain peptides, amino acids, and hyaluronic acid-to help decrease puffiness and dark circles. I love that they're shiny, too, and fun to wear. Plus, after long days, it can make the skin on your eyes feel refreshed AF.

Available at Amazon ($26)

Hydro Flask 20-Ounce Water Bottle

It always amazes me that I have ever traveled without a reusable water bottle, seriously. On each and every flight, I used to buy this huge plastic water bottle. With the world burning down because of global warming, I rerouted that into bringing my own bottle. I do have some Hydro Flask water bottles and really like traveling with these. They keep my water cold, and I am finding myself using them a lot post-plane ride, whatever work or vacation I'm jet-setting to. I add a water bottle into this air travel beauty essential list because dehydration is the number one reason for dry skin after flying. Besides, the humidity level in an airplane is around 20 percent usually, while standard humidity our skin gets used to is between 40-70 percent.

You can cake all the crap you want onto your face, but that's not gonna do anything for you when you are dehydrated and seriously thirsty. I'd chug water leading up to the flight, then drink more water on the flight to make sure you don't land with hella dry skin.

Superieur Electrolyte Powder Packets

I used to work with a nutritionist a few years ago, and she actually recommended putting this electrolyte powder into your water daily to avoid dehydration. My boyfriend Curtis and I use this stuff all the time; I love how minimal and clean the ingredients are. We find it really easy to just bring a bunch of these packets along whenever I'm traveling. One before and one after your flight is my recommendation for ultimate hydration.

Available at Amazon ($14)

Cadence The Capsule

The brand sent me a few of these little capsules to try, and I actually think they're super convenient, really cool. They offer the perfect amount of space to squirt your various beauty products inside, and I love that they're magnetic and can connect to each other. They are a bit pricey-they're $14 each-but I think these will last you a long time.

Available at Amazon  ($14 each)

Slip Pure Silk Sleep Mask

Particularly crucial to have a sleeping mask on red eye air travels. are Some ton of brands over the years have gifted these eye masks to me, and they really are the softest and comfiest sleep masks that exist in the market. It feels like there's nothing on my face every time I wear one. My aerophobia means I never sleep on a plane, but I'll don a mask if I want to "rest my eyes" or need to force myself to sleep on any long hauls. Otherwise, I use these masks almost every night for bed.

Nudestix Sunset Nudes 3-Piece Set

Nudestix, this is one of my favorite brands, especially traveling with these sticks. They're miniature and easy to pack, they come with a sharpener, and I find these shades to be flattering on most skin tones. I love packing this set in my carry-on to apply in the bathroom, right after I land and before I arrive at my destination. It makes me look like I got my shit together—even without a full face of makeup.

Available at Amazon ($30)

Bumble and bumble Pret-A-Powder

This little bottle of dry shampoo is atop my air travel essentials list. And it's lasted me a long, long time. I like that it's non-aerosol and is very powdery. I don't like that it's white and can leave a white cast on my brown hair. For this reason, I can't really apply it to the front of my hairline, as it will be a bit noticeable. I usually apply it along my roots in areas you won't be able to see it. It does blend in, just not as much as some of my other dark hair dry shampoos.

Dr. Christopher's Original Formulas Lower Bowel Formula Capsules

Why are constipation pills on your air travel beauty essentials, Daley? Well, because I’m a firm believer that constipation (or any other gut issue) affects your skin, especially while traveling. When your body is consuming foods it’s not used to, it might have a tougher time digesting and getting everything out. That's why I love traveling with these capsules, which help get things going and prevent any flare-ups of eczema or acne that may arise. I take two daily while traveling.

Available at Amazon ($14)

Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Face Cream

This face cream is to die for-it's so silky smooth, thick and luxurious, and does an amazing job of protecting your moisture barrier, which is a key necessity when you're traveling on an airplane. Yes, I know it's a bit pricey, but I'm pretty sure it's one of those creams that is worth the splurge. This especially comes in clutch when you apply it right after washing your face.

Available at Amazon ($54)

L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream

Very dry air combined with drying hand soap and hand sanitizers makes for very dry hands. It is always good to pack hand cream in your carry-on for application during the plane ride. If you can think of any other body parts that may appreciate a little extra TLC during your trip, go ahead and use this pick on those too.

Available at Amazon ($30)

Goodwipes Really Big Body Wipes

I studied abroad in Cape Town, South Africa in 2013, and I think that was the longest travel time I'd ever gone through. I had a few layovers, a bunch of stops. And I remember just feeling super, super dirty and gross when I finally arrived in Cape Town after a lot of hours. I really wish I had these body wipes for traveling anytime-it's great for short flights, long flights, or anything in between, really. I love that these contain essential oils and smell delightful. You could use any face wipes, though, in a pinch if you don't have body wipes on hand.

Available at Amazon ($10)

Touchland Glow Mist Rejuvenating Hand Sanitizer

Let's keep it a hundred: airplanes are dirty, and that makes it really necessary to sanitize your hands as much as possible. In turn, it's really relevant to add hand sanitizer to your air travel beauty essentials list. Luckily, Touchland's hand sanitizer really is the easiest thing to spritz on your hands since it's kind of thin, making for a pretty easy carry-on item to just shove in your pockets or put in a carry-on bag.

Available at Amazon ($30)

Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch Original

I've tried a load of pimple patches that are out there, and these ones are the best. If you plan on wearing a face mask, you can for sure hide these under your mask while flying. I like to stick one on, apply my face mask, then pull it off at the end of the flight and put a bit of makeup on in the airport bathroom once I land.

Available at Amazon ($13)

Tower 28 Beauty SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray

Hypochlorous acid face mists are a fad, but for all the right reasons. They work magic in rebalancing the pH levels on your skin that can go haywire while traveling. You can spritz this onto your face throughout the flight to minimize any skin irritation or redness. This is also a great pick to spray right before applying any vitamin C serum or hyaluronic acid serum.

Available at Amazon ($12)

invisibobble Original Traceless Spiral Hair Ties

If you want to put your hair up during the flight but also want to make sure it's flawless and crease-free once you land, use one of these. They come in many colors and sizes, great for any type of hair.

Available at Amazon ($5)

Detangling Hair Brushes - Wet Brush

I like bringing a Wet Brush along with me so that 1.) I can use it while my hair is wet and 2.) And I don't have to bring a hairbrush for wet hair and another for dry hair. This works well for both and it's cute and mini.

Available at Amazon ($13)

Eau Thermale Avène Thermal Spring Water

Again, if you wanna be extra on the airplane, this fab water mist is an air travel beauty essential. Avene is one of my favorite skincare brands, and they are famous for their skin-changing thermal spring water. Spritz some of this mid-flight for an added boost of hydration.

Available at Amazon ($9)

Alima Pure Satin Matte Foundation

This is literally the only foundation I feel comfortable enough traveling in. I know it's not going to clog my pores or break me out-especially when I'm wearing a mask for hours at a time. I usually try not to wear makeup on flights, and then put a light layer of coverage in the airport bathroom once I land.

Available at Amazon ($32)

Eau Thermale Avène Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream

If you have any dry patches before, during, or after a long flight, I recommend just taking some of this rescue cream to the area. It creates an amazing protective barrier on your skin and heals it from dryness and irritation, and also soothes redness at the same time.

Available at Amazon ($20)
