 How to Apply Tinted Moisturizer

I mean, it can really change everything for so many people. And you definitely don't have to be a professional makeup artist to master applying it. That's why, in this blog post, I will also share with you my best tips and tricks about how to apply tinted moisturizer-what it actually is and what it's good for, too.

Honestly, I am all about that sheer-coverage vibe when it comes to foundation. Full-coverage is just not my style. I am usually good with a light foundation, and then I pop on some concealer to tackle any zits or spots. Then again, it is a little no-brainer that I normally reach for a tinted moisturizer-for that lovely light coverage while getting all those hydrating goodies, am I right?

Most of the time, I reach for my Alima Pure Foundation for my base. But if I'm in a super big hurry and just wanna slap on some color before running out for errands, I'll go for a tinted moisturizer.

There are so many tinted moisturizers in the market. They're super trending lately, as this whole "clean girl aesthetic" has us all hooked, and people love that "less is more" vibe when it comes to beauty. Anyway, I'm going to share a guide on how to apply tinted moisturizer to score that fresh skin-like finish.

How to Use Tinted Moisturizer

Of course, putting on a tinted moisturizer the right way can definitely create that no-makeup vibe. Plus, it will keep your skin nice and hydrated, dewy. One cool thing about tinted moisturizer is that it can be so versatile. You can slap on a couple layers for some medium coverage or just go with one for that sheer to light coverage.

It's great-super awesome for people who have super dry skin. You can always slap on your moisturizer first and then put a tinted moisturizer on top just for that extra oomph of hydration. A tinted moisturizer is perfect, either when it is hot or cold. What I really like about it is the fact that, during winter when your skin is dry and flaky, you are able to use it over your moisturizer.

You can absolutely just use it as your moisturizer and foundation in the summer. It's a great way to keep your skin from feeling all heavy when you are all sweaty, hot, and just not comfortable. So here is how you put on tinted moisturizer.

what’s a tinted moisturizer, anyway?

A tinted moisturizer is, well, what it sounds like-a moisturizer with some color in it to help mask blemishes, hyperpigmentation, redness, or whatever else you'd cover up with foundation. Overall, tinted moisturizers give you lighter coverage than foundation. They're perfect for people who prefer going with a sheer to light coverage.

That's the best thing about tinted moisturizers, you get all of those perks in one. Most of them have ingredients you'd find in your normal moisturizer, such as hyaluronic acid, vitamin C, or even SPF. It just really simplifies your makeup routine and makes it much faster. You can skip that whole moisturizer step, which is nice!

Tinted moisturizers are totally buildable. So, if you're into that medium to full-coverage vibe, just slap on a few more layers of the tinted moisturizer to amp up that coverage. But usually, they're more for that sheer to light coverage kind of look.

What's the deal with tinted moisturizer?

Tinted moisturizer is great for a ton of stuff: hydration of the skin, evening out the complexion. Slap it on for those days you wanna look natural but don't feel like going full-on bare-faced.

One of the reasons I like tinted moisturizers is that they are super hydrating. That makes them perfect for people that have dry, acne-prone skin. You get the moisturizing benefits along with a little coverage from the tint.

One of the bummers about tinted moisturizer is it often doesn't come in a whole bunch of shades.

So even though they may have a lot of shades, the majority are often lighter and don't really provide a lot of leeway with BIPOC or darker-skinned individuals. But, you know, there are some brands like Saie, Rare Beauty, and ILIA that are actually making tinted moisturizers in deeper shades. Still, we could totally use more!

How to Use a Tinted Moisturizer

Step 1

Of course, first and foremost, you'll want to clean your face. I really like the Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser.

Step 2

Now, take your toner and serum(s) and put them on your nice, clean skin. Hang out; wait for each layer to dry before moving on. After that, put sunscreen on top of all the toners and serums. Unless your tinted moisturizer already has SPF over 30, you could skip adding extra sunscreen, but that's up to you!

Step 3

So, this is just a completely personal step. Some people like to use their day moisturizer underneath their tinted moisturizer, while others skip lotion completely and go for the tinted stuff. I tend to moisturize first with something like the Shani Darden Weightless Oil-Free Moisturizer, then I'll apply my tinted moisturizer. You can either just take your fingers and wipe it around on your face, or grab a beauty blender or a makeup brush if that's more your thing.

Step 4

After you slap on your tinted moisturizer, you can touch up any blemishes, dark circles, discoloration, or redness that might be showing through the light coverage. I’m a fan of using the MERIT concealer stick for this part.

Step 5

Once that's done, you can just slap on the rest of your makeup like you normally would. I usually wrap up my look with the Ogee Crystal Contour Collection, some mascara, brow gel, and a tinted lip balm.

Best Tinted Moisturizer for Acne-Prone Skin

Here's some of my favorite tinted moisturizers I have used over the years. They don't make me break out, and they offer good coverage without a super-heavy feel or look.

NARS Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer with Broad Spectrum SPF 30

I've just found this tinted moisturizer, and it's all that I use. I talked about this in my review of the NARS Foundation-it just gives a really great hint of color without feeling weighted or looking cakey. The color I have-Finland Light 1-perfectly matches my skin tone, and I just love how it doesn't look like it sits on my skin. Honestly, it is hard to even recognize that I wear any tinted moisturizer or foundation with this product.

So, it is a tad thick, like many of the tinted moisturizers. It is not going to feel super thin and watery like some foundations will. I'm super happy that it doesn't make me break out or irritate my skin, which is honestly tough for me to find. It's totally my new fave and I'd totally recommend it. I kind of wish I had found this sooner, to be real!

GEE Beauty Prime Skin

I came across it working as a beauty journalist, but I am literally SHOOK at how much I adore this product.

Super lightweight and gives an amazing glow to the skin, the best thing is it doesn't irritate my skin at all. I never really get away from this stuff. It has very light coverage, so don't expect this to do much in terms of covering up a lot of acne, discoloration, or dark circles. I like taking this as a base and then going in with my MERIT Concealer over any pimples or redness that I want to really conceal. The worst part of this pick is that I fall between two shades; I just use Prime 2 and Prime 3 mixed to find my perfect match. More shades would be great and really appreciated, but I hope one day they will get there. In the meantime, I will have to mix two. Also, this product is a tad on the expensive side at $58 a bottle. You do get a decent amount for your buck, if I am being honest.

So, I learned about The Lip Bar Just a Tint from the expert in acne, esthetician Sofie Pavitt. Honestly, I don't grab for this one as much as I do the other two, but I really like the formula, and I'm glad it doesn't make me break out. The color I have is "My Fair Lady," which isn't very much like my complexion, but it works just fine. Oh, and just a heads-up, this formula gives you a bit more coverage than those two tinted moisturizers I talked about earlier. If, then, you like a tinted moisturizer with medium to full coverage, then this is one you should surely try.
