The Greatest Deodorants That Aren't Toxic

These Are The Best Non-Toxic Deodorants

Non-toxic deodorants seem to be super trendy nowadays in taking care of your underarms, and quite rightly so-those aluminum-based ones might not be the best thing to slather on your pits. In addition, the non-toxic ones are much friendlier to your skin; more often than not, the ingredients in these are better for the planet, too.

While most times I do go for non-toxic deodorants, I would lie if I said I don't reach for my aluminum-based deodorant every so often, too. For many, many years, my go-to aluminum-based deodorant has been Secret Deodorant Clear Gel in the Refreshing Lavender scent.

Okay, so like, up until about five years ago, I was using my Secret deodorant every day. Nowadays, I use my non-toxic deodorants pretty much five days a week. I'll reach for my Secret deodorant on those days when I've got a long day of wandering around the city or when I just know I'm gonna get super stinky and sweaty and could really use some extra backup.

I am not here to badmouth aluminum-based deodorants- I'm a beauty editor and am constantly writing about how effective they truly are. It's not totally confirmed that aluminum can actually lead to cancer, so in the meantime I will be using my Secret a few days a week. And I'm definitely not keeping it a secret!

With that in mind, I really think it's a good idea to go for non-toxic deodorants whenever you get the chance. Through my job, I've tested so many, so I know which ones cut it and which ones are really just total duds. Here is a list of the top ones that I always grab.

Should you be using non-toxic de-odorants?

Lately, I have thought a lot about this question over the last few years. According to the National Cancer Institute, there just isn't enough science that really proves these aluminum-based deodorants and antiperspirants link to causing cancer. But really, I don't think it's such a bad idea to use some kind of nontoxic deodorant with clean ingredients, one that's also aluminum-free for your daily routine.

That can be kind of tough if you're the type who sweats a lot. I've been a beauty editor for a bit now, and honestly, I've never found a natural, nontoxic deodorant that actually works for people who sweat a ton, like all of the time. Just to give you a little context, I'd say I sweat like most people, but I really only get super sweaty when I'm working out. And yeah, I definitely notice that I'm way sweatier in the summer.

Toxic ingredients found in deodorants

So, it turns out there are a ton of potentially toxic stuff that you might find in deodorants these days. These ingredients include:

  • Phthalates
  • Parabens
  • Aluminum chlorohydrate
  • Triclosan
  • Propylene Glycol
  • Perfume

The coolest nontoxic deodorants

CRYSTAL Deodorant

I've been using this deodorant for ages, and I'm absolutely hooked. The smell of Lavender and White Tea is my favorite, definitely. It does not include aluminum chloride, phthalates, artificial fragrance, or parabens, which is great. The CRYSTAL Deodorant has this watery-gel vibe going on. Since it's somewhat liquidy, I usually wait until my armpits are dry before throwing on a bra and shirt. This doesn't leave any residue behind, nor does it cause those super-annoying white marks. I have found that it can give me pit stains on my white tees if I'm not paying attention. Let's be real, though-I think this stuff does an awesome job of keeping the odor away and making me feel fresh-smelling all day long.

Available on Amazon ($14)

Schmidt's Sensitive Skin Natural Deodorant-Aluminum Free

Oh man, I need to tell you about this natural deodorant I'm absolutely loving. It comes in two formulas-the signature and the sensitive one. I think the signature formula contains baking soda, and my armpits just hate it. The sensitive formula is the bomb because it doesn't contain baking soda and doesn't irritate my poor, sensitive underarms at all.

I really love all of the sensitive formula scents, but if I had to go with a fave, it's the Hemp Seed Oil & Sage. Fair warning: this stuff does leave a little residue, so just be aware. But seriously, it does such an amazing job with keeping B.O. at bay. If it's going to be super hot and humid out, I usually have to reapply once around lunchtime. But, like, I really don't let that bug me!

Available on Amazon ($8)

Native Sensitive Deodorant

The Native Sensitive Deodorant doesn't have any baking soda in it, and it's got, like, a million scents-in actuality, it's 10. Seriously, all the scents smell amazing, and I really dig that there are so many options. I mean, everyone has their own vibe for how they want their armpits to smell, right?

These can be used on men and women, but you might find that you need to reapply a few times a day.  Available on Amazon ($13)

Meow Meow Tweet Deodorant Stick Baking-Soda Free

Right? So, Meow Meow Tweet is super famous because of their Deodorant Cream. So, it's just like this paste you just slather on your pits with your fingers. Honestly, I'm really not into that whole thing, so I'm stoked they released a deodorant stick. Seriously, I'm into the sticks not containing baking soda because they don't mess with my underarms. And, oh, the packaging is seriously adorable and biodegradable, too!

Available on Meow Meow Tweet ($14)

Alo Yoga Supernatural Deodorant

This is a really great deodorant that I just like having in my medicine cabinet. It's available in a fresh citrus scent and also unscented. It's a bit pricey at $18 for a tube, but it has some cool skincare ingredients: vitamin C, tea tree, probiotics, and hyaluronic acid.

You know what? I really like that it does not irritate my skin, but the formula feels kinda thick when I put it on. If that is gonna bug you, I would go for the CRYSTAL deodorant instead. You can find it on Shopbop for $18.

Ursa Major Hoppin' Fresh Deodorant

I think this deodorant has pretty cool packaging, plus it smells minty-fresh. It goes on clear, which is great because it won't stain your clothes. Now, for the only things that I have to say aren't so good, this does contain baking soda.

Available on Amazon ($18)

Corpus Naturals Deodorant

It is the costliest and most fancied of deodorants in the list. It has five amazing scents; it honestly is a pampering on the armpits. But some people did say that despite not having baking soda inside, it gave them a nasty rash. So, if your skin is super sensitive, I mean, be careful with this one. But if you aren't really sensitive to stuff usually pertaining to skincare, you have to give this a try! You can get it on Amazon for 26 $.

PiperWai Natural Deodorant

So, funny story: when my boyfriend and I first started dating, like six years ago, we marathoned a ton of Shark Tank together. For our first Christmas, he got me these really nice earrings from Catbird and this natural deodorant from PiperWai. He was so stoked, saying, "They're from Shark Tank!" I swear I'll never forget him gifting me deodorant for Christmas, lol.

And you know what? It turns out that this is actually quite an awesome deodorant. This has baking soda in it, so if you've got sensitive skin, watch out for this one. I do dig that it has activated charcoal to soak up moisture and smells while helping to keep things hydrated with coconut oil.

Available on Amazon ($15)

Ursa Major's Sublime Sage Natural Spray Deodorant

Deodorant sprays feel kinda old-school, but man-which brand Ursa Major has totally made them cool again. This nontoxic deodorant spray knocks out the bacteria that make you stink in your underarms and keeps you smelling fresh throughout the day. Application is also pretty easy, and the product dries really well. Available on Amazon ($20)
