Is Hair Transplant Surgery Suitable for Women?
While women can also suffer from hair loss, they do not often make the best candidates for hair transplant surgery when compared to men. This is mainly related to the pattern of hair loss in both genders.
In most cases of male pattern baldness, healthy hair follicles can be found on the sides and at the back of the head; these can serve as donor sites for the transplantation process. In these areas, hair follicles are resistant to the action of the hormone DHT, responsible for the loss of hair on top of the head.
On the other hand, female pattern baldness involves diffuse thinning all over the scalp, which also does not present any clear donor sites. In females, even the hair follicles at the sides and the back of the scalp are susceptible to DHT, which means that transplanted hairs can still be prone to hair loss.
There are some exceptions, however. Those with conditions such as hair loss through mechanical or traction alopecia, male pattern baldness, and other patterned hair losses could still be considered for hair transplant surgery. The procedure will also work for women with trauma or scarring.
While hair transplantation may be very effective in some women, it is inherently more challenging and less predictable than in men. For this reason, women should consult with a qualified licensed hair restoration practitioner to discuss their potential candidacy for the process.
