My Honest Vanicream Review
For all my sensitive-skinned girlies, this is a review for you by Vanicream. I had come across Vanicream, probably five or six years ago, when my perioral dermatitis decided to flare up around my mouth, and my itchy skin just really needed a very bland moisturizer to take away the itching, irritation, and redness. I am usually flocking to my favorite Avéne skincare products when my eczema is out of control. Someone mentioned on Reddit Vanicream products, and I really wanted to give it a try. And I'm so glad that I did. If you need to gently cleanse and hydrate the skin without irritating your skin barrier, Vanicream should be your first line of defense.
I really love that this brand is so affordable and found at most drugstores nationwide. You won't see any crazy anti-aging or acne-fighting results with the Vanicream products, but you will notice how it will calm and soothe red, irritated, cracking skin after using the brand's bland, gentle line.
From below, I'm covering all my brand favorites in this review about Vanicream.
My Vanicream Review
One thing I really like about Vanicream is how all of its products are fragrance-free. Similar to Paula's Choice products, you don't have to worry about any fragrances wreaking havoc on your skin. Which is what I feel like I'm having to deal with all too often whenever I test other skin care brands for my job as a beauty journalist.
But, you should never judge a book by its cover-or even its boringness. Vanicream did such a great job of calming and soothing my always-inflamed skin. After using each of the following, my skin was less red, less itchy, and less flaky.
What Is Vanicream?
Vanicream is a skincare and haircare line for those of us with sensitive skin. They have adult and baby lines that are well-formulated without all the harsh and irritating elements you could find in other market skincare. Vanicream is available at pharmacies nationwide, but you can also buy online. That said, it is an extremely well-loved brand by folks with sensitive skin, people with eczema and psoriasis, even people with really inflamed acne.
Vanicream Ingredients
Some of the common ingredients you might find across many products from Vanicream are hydrating and soothing ingredients such as the following.
- Allantoin
- Ceramides
- Dimethicone
- Glycerin
- Hyaluronic acid
- Panthenol
- Pyrithione zinc
- Squalane
- Zinc oxide
The Best Vanicream Products
VanicreamTM Moisturizing Cream
This is the only one I use most out of all Vanicream products. I always have this huge tub on my bathroom counter. Although this is meant to be used on your body, I think, I use this on my face. It is super thick and rich, non-pore clogging, and does a great job of hydrating and soothing my skin when it's inflamed. This is the cream I would use in place of my regular moisturizer if I can feel that my skin barrier is depleted and needs some extra TLC to make sure I am not freaking my face out. Sometimes, when using too much on my face, it tends to leave the skin with a weird feeling-like there's some kind of film on it-and too heavy.
I'd say that you do not need to apply a lot in order to get your skin properly hydrated. Little is enough, and you can also apply this on your body, too. I also sometimes like to use this on my hands when I get that winter itch, or if my eczema is flaring up. One jar lasts me about a year or more. This formula is pretty thick, but not as thick as the Vanicream Moisturizing Ointment which I don't really use.

Vanicream Gentle Facial Cleanser
No review of Vanicream would be complete without this product. This is my number two, favorite Vanicream pick. I really love this cleanser. It's just the best foaming cleanser that never strips my skin, though it thoroughly removes all my makeup at the end of the day. Super gentle, it is fragrance-free, and it is just a great facial cleanser-no frills.
Vanicream Moisturizing Lotion
Another product that I am using, which I think is targeted for the body, I use on my face, anyway. Unlike the Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream above, this is a moisturizing lotion with a much lighter consistency. If you like a lotion better than cream, then this one is for you. Because I have pretty dry skin, this product isn't always hydrating enough for my face, especially when it's winter. That said, I do like using this almost as a serum in wintertime: cleaning my face and applying this as a serum, then putting a heavier moisturizer on top.

Vanicream Antiperspirant Deodorant for Sensitive Skin
Vanicream Daily Facial Moisturizer
This is the Vanicream moisturizer that's actually formulated for your face, haha! It contains soothing agents like hyaluronic acid and ceramides and looks really nice under makeup, too. Some people may be sensitive to hyaluronic acid; if you know your skin doesn't take that ingredient well, you may want to opt for the Vanicream Moisturizing Lotion.
This moisturizer is a little bit thicker in consistency than the Vanicream Moisturizing Lotion, but much lighter from the Vanicream Moisturizing Skin Cream.
Vanicream Hair Shampoo and Hair Conditioner
Got an angry scalp? Try the Vanicream Hair Shampoo and Conditioner combo! Fragrance-free, it does a great job really cleaning and conditioning scalp and hair, and just gets the job done.
Is Vanicream Good For Acne?
Well, now, this is a trick question. Thankfully, I have used Vanicream products a great deal and even more experience having to deal with acne for such a long time. First and foremost, there are no active ingredients in Vanicream products aimed at acne. For instance, ingredients like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, and retinoids have widely been studied for their acne-fighting benefits-and you will not find any such ingredients in Vanicream products.
But-and this is a huge but-Vanicream is one of those brands that won't further irritate your already inflamed, acneic skin. It's not going to make it itchier, irritated, red, or flaky. In my experience, it has never caused one single breakout or irritated any of my already pre-existing pimples. It doesn't make the acne go away, but it does a great job calming skin and reducing redness that could have been caused by acne, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, and post-inflammatory erythema. So, my response would be that, yes, Vanicream is good for acne in that it won't further irritate your skin. However, I really would recommend you use a spot treatment and hydrocolloid patches along with Vanicream when you're treating the acne.
