How to Reduce Under-Eye Skin Tightness Over Time

How to Short- and Long-Term Tighten Under-Eye Skin

Eye creams, eye masks, and under-eye filler. If you're wondering how to tighten under-eye skin, rest assured that there are plenty of options. You know how caring for the skin around your eyes is quite tricky? That's due in large part to the skin there being quite a bit more sensitive than on your face and body. The skin under the eyes can look thinner and saggy compared to the rest of the face, which might affect your general appearance and confidence. Of course, how you look should be one of the last things that gives you confidence.

After all, you're so much more than your physical appearance. You should be confident in your skin because you're smart, kind, compassionate, intelligent, and funny. But since we do live in an looks-oriented society, we tend to get caught up in how we look. And the older we get, the more gravity begins to work on some parts of our skin. One of the first places to droop? The skin under your eyes. If you are wondering what causes loose under-eye skin and how to tighten under-eye skin effectively, here are the answers below.

How to Tighten Under-Eye Skin

Before we can begin to discuss treating any condition, it's best to know what causes the affliction.

To that end, we're looking at what causes loose under-eye skin. That way, you can choose solutions that work. For example, if your skin under your eyes is dried out because you're dehydrated, there is a minimally invasive solution to the problem. Drinking water! But if there is something more at play, then you will probably want to solve it with a more invasive procedure, such as fillers.

What Causes Loose Skin Under Eyes?

There are three main things that cause the skin under your eyes to become loose. Below, we'll explain each one and get into how, exactly, these lead to saggy under-eye skin.

Aging: Collagen and elastin are the proteins accountable for maintaining the skin tight and firm to touch. The former acts as a connective tissue, while the latter supports the elasticity of the skin. As one ages, these proteins gradually diminish, meaning the under-eye skin loosens up as we age. (For what it's worth, other signs of aging include developing eye bags and dark circles.)

Genetics : Another reason your skin in the eye area may be drooping is due to genetics. From here, either of two things can occur. In the first instance, your skin is not supported well by the muscles and tissues under your eyes; therefore, it sags. You can also inherit conditions that make you produce less collagen or elastin. Again, having less of these proteins means that your skin will have less hydration and plumping.

Sun damage : This is one of the most common causes of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as loose skin, regardless of skin tones. The UV rays affect the top layer of your skin by burning off skin cells. As a result, the skin elasticity is reduced. The good news is that you can prevent most of this by applying (and re-applying!) sunscreen.

The better news is that we have a few products in stock for you at the end of this article. Keep reading to find eight tips and treatment options to tighten the skin under your eye.

How To Tighten Skin Under Eyes

 Ensure you're getting adequate sleep.

The National Institutes of Health says that adults 18 years or older should be logging at least seven hours of sleep per night. During sleep cycles, our body fixes itself—skin barrier included. Meaning that getting enough sleep is a great way to let your body produce more collagen and elastin. Ultimately, you will see improved skin with higher-quality sleep.

Drink water.

We wanted to specifically list the first two tips as things you can do to address the problem from the inside out. Since our bodies are mainly composed of water, we need it to plump up our skin. Dehydration causes our skin to start losing moisture. Per Harvard Medical School, adults should aim to drink around six cups of water per day. Try to hit that mark to make sure your skin is in tip-top shape.

Test new skin care products.

One of my favorite things about being a beauty editor has to be the opportunity to test all the new skincare products under the sun. When hyaluronic acid first hit the market a few years ago, I was hooked. It's still a product that I use religiously and one that works wonders for my no-longer-20-something skin.

I love the Glow Recipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Serum. Three drops and you're on your way to the dew of your dreams. If you're in the market for an eye cream, though, I'd strongly suggest Farmacy Wake Up Honey Eye Cream. Because it contains vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, it'll brighten your eyes while hydrating them.

Get a chemical peel.

Tightening under the eye can be done with chemical peels. According to the website of Kenneth Steinsapir, M.D., who specializes in eyelid plastic surgery, a "chemical peel of the lower eyelids has the ability to induce sufficient new collagen production to contribute to flattening the under eye circle as well as smoothing the lower eyelid creases. "You can have a chemical peel done with your dermatologist or esthetician. Remember that your skin will be raw after a peel, so you have to take extra good care of it because it will be quite sensitive.

Don’t skimp on sunscreen.

As we've said before, wearing sunscreen on the regular is quite possibly one of the best things you can do for your skin. Not only will it help you maintain a generally youthful appearance, but it's also going to help keep those dark circles at bay. Some of our favorite SPF options include the Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen and Krave Beauty's Beet the Sun Sunscreen. Both of these are great for all skin tones since they don't leave a white cast. (Promise!)

Take collagen supplements.

I've had a collagen supplement or two in my time. That said, I have to admit that I've never persisted with it long enough to see any tangible results. When I was taking my gummies, I would get Nature's Bounty Hair, Skin, & Nails Gummies every time I went to Target. They have 100mg of collagen and biotin, and they come in strawberry and orange flavors. Since then, though, I have heard great things about Hum Collagen Love. It's a capsule that contains collagen peptides, vitamin C, and hyaluronic acid. (Also, in case you're wondering, Does collagen help with acne?, You might want to know that the answer it's more complicated than it seems.)

Book a laser resurfacing appointment.

Simply put, laser resurfacing is a skin-tightening treatment that removes your skin's top layer to stimulate collagen production. This treatment, according to Laser & Skin Surgery Center of New York, is non-invasive and takes about 90 minutes. If you properly care for your face-i.e., wash it daily and maintain a routine regimen of skincare-you can get results that last as long as three years. This is an excellent alternative for those who want a longer-lasting solution for tightening the under-eye skin.

Look into dermal fillers.

Dermal fillers are injections containing liquid, better known as filler, going into a specified area. You may have heard of lip fillers or cheek fillers. Well, there's under-eye filler too. This treatment will, well, fill up the loose skin in your under-eye area, making it tighter. This procedure is technically non-invasive, but there will be minor bruising and/or swelling since you're puncturing your skin.
