The Simplest Fall Skincare Routine Available

You gotta have a fall skincare routine to keep your skin healthy as the seasons switch up. I totally get that I need to adjust my routine when it starts getting chillier. Especially because my eczema acts up a little on my face and hands.

So, even though fall can mess with my skin a bit, it's still my second favorite season. Summer has taken the top spot for me in the last few years. Not to mention, my birthday is in early November and Thanksgiving is my fave holiday. Plus, you really can't go wrong with the stunning, changing leaves on the East Coast every autumn.

The Ultimate Fall Skincare Routine You Should Try Hey there!

So, in this fall skincare routine blog post, I'm going to share with you my go-to fall skincare tips and chat about the products I like to switch out when it starts getting chilly. I'll also break down the steps you should follow in your fall skincare routine. And lastly, I'll explain why it's a good idea to change up your skincare routine for the season.

Hey, should you change your skincare routine with the seasons?

Yeah, I really think you should switch up your skincare routine for each season. Also, adding some hydrating products and making sure to drink enough water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside is super important for your fall routine. It's insane how much the cooler weather affects my skin and hair. You know how my eczema, perioral dermatitis, and seborrheic dermatitis just freak out as soon as the fall hits and the dew point drops? Changing up your skincare routine in the fall makes all the difference when it comes to keeping your skin looking good. Below is a rundown of what my skincare routine for the fall consists of.

How to Take Care of Your Skin in the Fall

Step 1 – Cleanse your face

One of the most important steps in any skincare routine is washing your face—morning and night. Some people find it cool to skip the morning wash, but to be honest, I find that if I don't give my skin a good cleanse in the morning, my skin feels quite itchy and irritated.

I totally love using my Vanicream Cleanser ($10) in fall because it's super gentle and doesn't make my face dermatitis worse. It's really basic, but it gets rid of makeup at the end of the day, which is awesome. Oh, and a quick skincare tip: try to steer clear of washing your face with hot water because it will totally dry out your skin when it gets colder.

Step 2 – Toner application

I really think this is a big deal that people usually forget about. I can totally see a massive difference in my skin when I use toner compared to when I skip it. There are a couple of toners that I am into when the weather starts getting chilly. I just found out about the Rhode Skin Glazing Milk ($30), and I am seriously loving it. This toner is great during the fall skincare routine since it gives you a nice amount of hydration without going overboard. I also appreciate that it leaves a subtle glow on your skin. Another go-to toner I really like for dry skin and cooler weather is the Paula's Choice CALM Nourishing Milky Toner ($26).

This pick is kind of like the Rhode Skin Glazing Milk, but it's a tad thicker and more hydrating. It doesn't really leave that shiny look on your skin like the Glazing Milk does. This formula really helps calm my irritated skin and just feels super nice on my face.

Step 3 – Apply serum.

I'm all about a good serum! I think they're a great addition to your fall skincare routine, really.
So, I have a few serums that I absolutely love using when it starts getting cold outside. They are the Cocokind Ceramide Barrier Hydration Serum ($22), the Rhode Skin Peptide Glazing Fluid ($30), and the Skinfix barrier+ Triple Lipid + Niacinamide Activating Serum ($69). Yeah, I know Skinfix is pretty pricey, but seriously, it's really nice, works great, and is totally worth the splurge.

Step 4 – Slap on that acne-fighting stuff!

If you're anything like me and deal with acne, you should totally try adding an acne-fighting product into your skincare routine. I typically use this product in my nighttime fall skincare routine. Honestly, sometimes I think using an acne product during the day, especially under makeup, doesn't look that great. Right now, I am super into mandelic acid. And I'm pretty sure it's completely changed my skin. I really love the Sofie Pavitt Face Mandelic Serum ($54), and I honestly think it's worth every penny.

I've gone through bottles of this stuff. I really think it's a solid formula for folks with acne-prone skin who also have sensitive skin. It exfoliates, helps get rid of dead skin cells, and is an all-around great choice for getting rid of dark spots.

Step 5 – Slap on some moisturizer.

So, this is the second-to-last step in my fall skincare routine. Honestly, I just can't get enough of a thick, creamy moisturizer. Plus, when it gets colder, it's totally the best time to whip out a moisturizer that's a little thicker.
I've been using the Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Peptide Cream ($54) forever as my go-to moisturizer, and I even included it in my best skincare products for dry skin. It gives just the right amount of hydration for my dry, acne-prone skin, and it doesn't cause any breakouts for me. I've been obsessed with this combination for my nighttime routine: the Rhode Skin Barrier Butter ($38) and the Rhode Skin Barrier Restore Cream ($30).

In the mornings, I just slather the Restore Cream all over my face. So, at night, I will lather up some Barrier Butter on my cheeks, forehead, and nose and then put the Restore Cream on my chin. I tend only to get breakouts on my chin, and I find the Barrier Butter far too heavy for acne-prone skin.

Step 6 – Eye cream application

I used to think eye cream was a total joke. But you know what? I've totally flipped on this little step in my fall skincare routine. Now that I'm in my 30s, I've really seen a change in my crow's feet and those fine lines and wrinkles around my eyes since I started using eye cream every day. I'm all about using eye cream at night because, honestly, if I do it in the morning, my mascara tends to smudge. I'm really into thick, creamy eye creams. The ones that I seriously can't live without right now are the Skinfix barrier+ Triple Lipid Brightening Eye Cream ($54) and the Cocokind Revitalizing Eye Cream ($19). Both of them really help lock in moisture and keep my skin nice and hydrated all night long.

Step 7 – Apply some self-tanner.

It's a nice little addition to your fall skin care regimen. I mean, who wouldn't want to give their skin a little pick-me-up and look like they just got back from the beach during fall and winter?
My go-to facial self-tanner that doesn't make me break out is the Saltyface Tanning Water, and it's $44. I completely never use this at night. But I like to throw it on a few times a week to spice up my face a bit.

Step 8 – Apply sunscreen I gotta say

I am not exactly great at slapping on the sunscreen daily. Like, especially during fall and winter. Oops! But seriously, it's really important to keep the skin safe from sun damage all year 'round. That means daily slathering of sunscreen—something a couple of my faves are the Face Reality Daily SPF 30 Lotion ($33) and the Babo Botanicals Daily Sheer Tinted Mineral Sunscreen Fluid SPF50 ($21).
